Solutions - Retaining Walls and Slopes

Ares® Retaining Wall Systems

From the ground up, everything about ARES® Retaining Wall Systems has been designed to resist chemical, biological or electrical corrosion. Like all of our mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) systems, ARES Systems feature integrated components developed to work together for optimum efficiency, top performance and ease of installation:

  • Precast panel facings – featuring compressive strength that meets AASHTO standards, available in standard or customized dimensions
  • Tensar® Geogrids
  • Bodkin connectors – designed to secure geogrid to panels

The system’s panel-to-geogrid positive mechanical connection assures full load transfer from wall face to reinforcement, resulting in unsurpassed reliability, even in settlement-prone areas. And since geogrid and connector are made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) material, soil reinforcement is 100% synthetic. That eliminates concerns over corrosion from long-term exposure to chlorides, sulfates, low-resistivity soils or random electrical currents. At the same time, it allows the use of a wide range of backfills, including recycled materials, for cost savings plus opportunities for sustainable design. All this makes ARES Systems the ideal choice for “hot” backfill soils, transformer platform areas and electrified rail systems (for more on this, see the Market Sectors page).

Evaluated by HITEC and approved by most state DOTs, ARES Systems are proven MSE retaining wall solutions; millions of square feet have been installed on a variety of transportation and site development projects. And like all of our systems, ARES Systems benefit from Tensar International’s full range of services, including engineered drawings and site assistance, to ensure successful installation.

One Solution, Two Construction Options

ARES Systems offer two primary construction options depending upon your site, structural and budgetary needs: panel walls and two-stage construction walls.

Panel walls include the ARES Modular Panel Wall System and the ARES Full Height Panel Wall System. Modular panels are available in 5 ft x 5 ft and 5 ft x 9 ft sizes in a variety of textures, patterns and finishes. Full height panels, cast to specification, provide a continuous facing extending from the top of the leveling pad base to the capping element (coping, traffic barriers, etc.). Because they involve fewer components, full height panels can be faster to install.

The ARES Two-Stage Construction Wall System combines a flexible, settlement-tolerant facing element with a retaining wall design, offering a way to use a surcharge cell to force foundation settlement during construction. This eliminates the need for excavation and replacement of settlement-prone soils, deep pile foundations or temporary surcharge embankments that conventional solutions may require. Instead, ARES Two-Stage Construction Walls provide a left-in-place, permanent MSE structure with an architectural facing of precast panels, Mesa® Retaining Wall Units or cast-in-place concrete.
