Flexible Pavement Roads

Flexible pavement structures for roads, lots, and yards, consisting of asphalt or bituminous surface materials.

Common Problems & Available Solutions

Geosynthetics play a major role in subgrade stabilization for flexible pavements. They introduce an economical option to optimize the quantity of required construction materials, while offering reinforcement at the subgrade level to build a long-lasting pavement.

What are Flexible Pavement Roads?

Flexible pavement structures, otherwise known as areas of asphalt, have a tendency to bend or crack due to traffic loads. They often fail prematurely because of progressive lateral and vertical displacement and weakening of the aggregate base course. Geosynthetics present an opportunity to enhance performance by minimizing maintenance and rehabilitation intervals common to flexible pavements.

Additional truck deliveries are avoided by decreasing aggregate fill requirements, resulting in a more resilient solution with a smaller carbon footprint. In addition, reflective cracking is one of the largest contributors to flexible pavement deterioration. Hot mix asphalt (HMA) pavement reinforcement can be installed to become the hidden strength in the road or other paved surfaces. A form of geosynthetic, known as an asphalt interlayer, provides a stiff tensile element at the bottom of an overlay to drastically improve pavement performance and reduce maintenance and life cycle costs. Identifying common causes of failure and the benefits to gaining a complete understanding of how to counteract potential short-term and long-term threats to the life expectancy of your pavements and roads is critical. That's why we have outlined a simple explanation of the importance of optimizing your pavement designs with geosynthetics HERE.
